Apple’s new M5 chip has several higher-end variants coming next year, and according to a new report, an M5 Ultra will be among them.
Next year’s Mac Studio will reportedly have M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip options
The M4 chip generation, to many pro users’ surprise, never brought a high-end Ultra version.
Instead, when Apple debuted its latest Mac Studio, it offered two options:
- M4 Max
- M3 Ultra
The use of two chips from different generations meant that some users were faced with a dilemma. Should they buy the most powerful overall chip, the M3 Ultra, or save money on an M4 Max that in certain workflows would be the better option?
It seems that Apple doesn’t plan to create that same scenario again any time soon.
In a new report at Bloomberg that’s largely about a new low-cost MacBook product, there’s mention of an M5 Ultra chip in development too
Mark Gurman writes that next year will also bring:
Per Gurman, next year’s Mac Studio will offer M5 Max and M5 Ultra options for users.
He doesn’t mention any other Macs getting the M5 Ultra. A while back though, Gurman was expecting a new Mac Pro to launch some time in 2025.
A new Mac Pro hasn’t been mentioned in rumors for some time. If it’s still in development, however, it could plausibly arrive in 2026 with an M5 Ultra option too.
